I often get asked “why did you become a nurse?” To be sincere, I am not exactly sure how the decision came about, but I do remember many years ago when my late maternal grandmother said to me “you should be a nurse…because of your compassion” during my childhood. I paid her no mind because at this time I wanted to be anything but a nurse. Also, this was in Nigeria where a career in nursing was not looked kindly on. Fast forward to my mid-twenties, I went ahead and enrolled in nursing and graduated with a diploma in nursing in 2007. Garnered experience in different healthcare settings, before relocating to the USA in 2014, got my BSN and began traveling as a registered nurse.

I have been privileged to learn through all these experiences that healthcare professionals will always be in demand because at some point in life people will need assistance with maintaining their health, and with activities of daily living. People are at their most vulnerable when they must rely on others. Therefore, having access to health care personnel who will go above and beyond for us at this period of need cannot be overestimated.
